Environmentalism Can Be Fun
Sustainable Endurance – Giving the planet a recovery day
By Bruckner Chase

{Excerpted from an upcoming Liberty Sports Magazine article}

As runners, walkers, cyclist, triathletes or anyone new to a fitness lifestyle, we know how great it feels to cross a finish line or just end a workout with our hearts racing and spirits soaring.  What many of us may not realize is that the wind, waves, sun and earth that energize our workouts and events are being as beat up from overuse as our own bodies without adequate chances to recover.  Just becoming aware of the impact we have on our environment and global community can allow us yet another way to feel great about our pursuit of a full and active lifestyle.  Informed choices when we buy our gear, head out the door to train or sign up for a race may mean that we come back feeling great while leaving the planet a little more rested for our next epic event.

We don’t have to change our whole lives to make a difference in our local and global environment.  In the words of Jacques Cousteau, “I long for a place for those who say, ‘No, but…,’ those who propose rational ways to benefit from nature’s dividends and refuse to squander its capital.”  As you set up your training schedule for 2009, think about adding a column for a little green check mark next to workouts and races that gives you another way to measure how great you did in 2009.  In the world of outdoor pursuits there are companies, products and people already leading the way to truly sustainable endurance.
