Report from Race Organizer, Mike May
"First chance I had to write a small note to finalize what really was a great day for the Paddle For a Cause since getting home to California.
First I want to thank everyone involved who has made this event more than I ever could have anticipated, but especially my wife Kate who really does so much of the prep work and reminds me to come back when I go out on my long paddles. The day started out with me paddling my board over to the wonder bar seeing two paddlers Reade Ware and Joe Destafano getting ready to leave an hour earlier to make the tides at the inlet in Longport. Soon paddlers started to show up including the members of the Board of Trustees who planned to paddle stand up as a relay team with the assistance of a few beers to help the cause. We all gathered together to gives thanks for the day in a traditional Hawaiian circle and then we were off. It soon became apparent that Todd Desatnick my friend from Cape May wanted to make a race of it this year and he was joined by Ryan Griffin from Cape May and David Funk who most people know as a champion rower. They eventually caught the two early paddlers and finished the 21 miles in a blazing 4 hours and 40 minutes. I was lucky to have a couple young guys paddle with me for the whole 21 miles Matt Conover and Andy Carter and we came in at a respectable 5 hours and 5 minutes. All thru the event the amazing Margo Pellagrino the long distance outrigger canoe paddler and environmentalist kept watch to make sure all participants were making it around safe. Google her name if you want to see a true endurance mad woman who wants to protect our seas. We had a great crowd at the wonder bar welcoming all the paddlers and I must thank the owners the Denafo's who were gracious to allow us to use their place as the start off and finish this year. It was better than Margate Pier!!!!!. As I watched the rest of the paddlers finish it was great to see John Forkin finish and the young guys Schwegman and Callahan and my old catcher Sean Duffy. Mike Tkacz who worked all night and still paddled. Of course the Peltonen brothers who if they got off those shitty boards would have been at the front of the pack . Our stand up paddlers Kristine and Jim who braved a tough course. I know money will continue to come in after the event but for me it is always the reminder of the people like Dean who continue to do battle and those like my father who lost the good fight. There are great pictures on the web site Local Swell and I'm sure we'll get more ink on the event in the future. We more than tripled the participants this year I would like to see us double it next year and really make it a race, besides somebody has to kick Todds ass next year I'm getting too old as my friend Jon Coen keeps pointing out.
Thanks everyone for a great day"

Tony's Big Thing - 19+ Miles Around Ocean City
Tony Mehalic & Bruckner Chase, with support from members of Graham
Parker, Wendy Wallace,
Kacey McCafery, Bill Dorney & Michelle
Evans-Chase, took advantage of ideal weather and ocean conditions to
complete a 19+ Mile paddle around Ocean City in 4:44:06. Starting from
the 1st Street Lifeguard station we took advantage of calm seas and a
light North wind on our clockwise trip around the island. We were
joined on sections by members of Team Dorney and were refueled along at
Corson's Inlet and 17th Street Lagoon. An amazing paddle that could
evolve into a premier paddleboard race on the East Coast.
Sea Isle Island Paddle - Sunday, Oct 12 - 17.3 Miles
After the success of last week's paddle and thanks to the incredible fall weather Graham and I decided to loop Sea Isle. The ocean was a bit rougher this week, and we had a more intense than expected incoming tide heading back up to the Deauville, but despite a small navigational error we completed the paddle in 4:46. Ludlum Bay was shallower than expected, but the bay was amazingly clear and calm. (Which helped since we had to walk a couple hundred yards across the shallows.) This is going to be a great swim in the spring as a next step to swimming around all the South Jersey Islands.
